BALANCING FAMILY AND WORK
– Dr Ada Ezeka
Text: 1 Corinthians 14:40
“Everything must be done in a proper and orderly way.” GNT
“…but all things should be done decently and in order.” RSV
As much as God wants us to do whatever we do with all our might, he wants us to do it well and in order. That is, according to his ways, principles and prescribed order (Read Isaiah 55:8 -11).
But you know, God is not an anyhow God. So whatever you do anyhow is not acceptable with him. It must be God-how! That’s why Jeremiah 5:4 says we have poor results…
““Then I thought, “These are only the poor and ignorant. They behave foolishly; they don’t know what their God requires, what the Lord wants them to do.” GNT
Parenting is a responsibility that marriage confers on both father and mother…When either of the two is not awake to that responsibility, it cannot be a holistic parenting…
“Didn’t the Lord make you one with your wife? In body and spirit you are his. And what does he want? Godly children from your union. So guard your heart; remain loyal to the wife of your youth.” NLT
So there cannot be holistic parenting without the full involvement and commitment of both husband and wife/ father and mother.
This makes it clear that single parenting is not God’s perfect will for any child at all!
Holistic parenting is parenting that takes cognizance of the development of the total man – spirit, soul and body.
No matter how much any other institution tries, only the family can guarantee the development of the total man for every child…God expects you to raise children after your kind – Genesis 1:11 & 24.
God testified of Abraham in Genesis 18:19,
““For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him ( to be like him) that they keep the way of the LORD, to do righteousness and justice, that the LORD may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him.” – NKJV
The home is the best atmosphere for holistic parenting…because that’s where both parents are expected to be.
In the Parable of the sower, the different grounds into which the good seed fell…which determined the quality of fruits they produced…represent the home, which at the end of the day, determines what every child born into it eventually becomes – Mark 4:1-11.
This is why it’s important that both parents endeavor to strike a balance between family and work.
It’s a pity that the challenge of making ends meet, especially, now constrains both parents to go out to work…It is also one of the inevitable challenges of civilization and development.
But it should not be an excuse to neglect our primary responsibility of raising children that God can use to make more generations of men…and to make better and healthier societies…
For what does it profit a man to make all the money, name and fame in this world, and lose his own children?
One child lost to rebellion, suicide, drug-addiction, etc, is a generational catastrophe…is generations lost! Because inside that boy or girl are generations of sons and daughters yet unborn. Yes!
When parents come to know and understand the generational impact of their parenting…they will commit themselves to whatever price they need to pay to balance family and work.
Wisdom is the name of the game…
Ecclesiastes 10:10b says,
“But wisdom brings success.” – NKJV
Verse 15 says,
“The labor of fools wearies them, For they do not even know how to go to the city!” -NKJV
Nothing done in foolishness, that is, without knowing the how-to of it, can ever give you the desired result. So Isaiah 1:17a says, “Learn to do well…”
That’s why the need for parenting conferences, like this one, cannot be overemphasized. If nobody is teaching you what you need to know, you can’t learn…and you can’t do well. It’s just as simple as that.
That’s why people register in Higher institutions, pay school fees, and submit themselves to the training and knowledge ïrequired to practice law, medicine, architecture, etc…
Even vulcanizers go for training to learn how to fix holes in tyres! But where do fathers and mothers go to receive training for parenting?
DON’T ASSUME YOU KNOW HOW!
Don’t assume that just because you became a father or a mother that you can handle the awesome responsibility of designing and nurturing destinies…Yes, that’s what parenting is!
Don’t say “ I’m trying my best.”…Ask God for his help and wisdom…
When Solomon suddenly found himself king over the nation of Israel, he didn’t assume that just being the son of the previous king, David, was enough to handle such a great responsibility. So he went to God for help…
1 Kings 3:1-9
“And now, O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in. And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude. Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?”
Uzziah was made king at the age of 16…He knew he needed help, so he did something about it…
2 Chronicles 26:5
“Uzziah sought God during the days of Zechariah, who taught him to fear God. And as long as the king sought guidance from the lord, God gave him success.”
“And if anyone longs to be wise, ask God for wisdom and he will give it! He won’t see your lack of wisdom as an opportunity to scold you over your failures but he will overwhelm your failures with his generous grace.” TPT
What I’m I saying? There is no formula anyone can give you on how to create balance between your work and your responsibilities to your home/family. It’s something that only the Holy Spirit can help you to achieve. Read John 14:17-26.
That demands that you begin to pay greater attention to your relationship with God. A vibrant and intimate relationship with God will keep furnishing you with wisdom for balance and success in every area of life. Yes…there’s no formula or quick fix!
Genesis 39:2 said of Joseph, ““The LORD was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.” -NKJV
Receive grace and favor now, in Jesus name!
